How To Use Expanding Foam To Fix A Fence Post That's Wobbly

Blog

Do you have a fence in your yard with posts that are a bit wobbly? Your fence posts should be completely stable when in the ground, and a wobbly fence post definitely needs to be fixed. One way that you can do this is with expanding foam, which will make the process of fixing a fence post easy. Here is what you need to know about this unique repair process.

Dig Up The Fence Post

The first thing you need to do is dig up the ground around the fence post. Get rid of all the dirt that is on top of the existing cement and some of the dirt that is to the side of it as well. This is necessary to make some space for the expanding foam that you are going to put into the hole.

Prepare The Expanding Foam

You can purchase expanding foam at your local home improvement store, which is fairly easy to put into the post hole on your own. One thing that you need to be aware of is that you need to move quickly after you are done preparing the foam. This is no turning back, so make sure that you are ready to go.

The process works by rolling the bag tightly on the marked end to put pressure on the seal that separates the two-part polyurethane foam mixture. At this point, the bag should still be sealed. Once the seal breaks, you have to move the polyurethane mixture around in the bag for about 15 seconds. You will then cut a corner off the bag of expanding foam to pour it out into the post hole. Chances are that you will not use all of the expanding foam from a single bag in one hole. Plan to quickly move on if you have several posts to fix so that you can continue pouring the foam in each hole before it starts to expand.

Cover The Hole With Foam

You should then cover the hole with dirt so that you push the expanding foam deep into the hole and it can push its way into the nooks and crannies around the post. Some of the foam may eventually expand and push its way upward through the dirt. That is normal, and you can always trim excess foam from the hole if it is overflowing. The nice thing about expanding foam is that it works quickly. It should only take a couple of hours for the foam to become completely firm and hold the post in place.

A local fence contractor can help you with any fence post repairs. Reach out to a local fencing company.
